Sick of the way autism is portrayed

I didn't mind watching this show during the summer to pass the time and might watch it again next summer if it's back... but I was really hoping that this show would have a more accurate portrayal of the disorders it exhibits. I am a special needs teacher and have spent years working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and was more than a little angry when they showed the little girl with autism have a "super talent". It seems like EVERY time a person with autism is on TV or in movies, they have a super natural ability to math, art, music... you name it! Do you know how many parents expect this same unrealistic expectation of their children when autism is diagnosed??? That somehow "Johnny" might never say "I love you" or be comfortable with hugs and affection, but will be a virtuoso??? It rarely, very rarely, happens! It is such a misconception and is so prevalent that I had hoped that, somewhere in the media, the reality of severe, pervasive autism will be shown!
Anyway, that's my rant. I appreciate anyone who reads it and takes a second before asking a parent of a child with autism what their kid's "special ability" is.
Do you find this valuable?
