Characters dress

The hospital director never seems to dress appropriately for the show. She doesn't seem to dress professionally. The low cute blue dress on tonight's episode is inappropriate for most job places, especially a mental health hospital.

She would have been sent home to change her clothing the minute she walked through the door. If she returned even one day flaunting her big tits, she would be escorted out the door and asked never to return. She would negate any chance of a positive professional reference from that point in her career.

First off ER was a hit series for yrs..the doctors etc on there didn't have to dress like a slut to get noticed..second yes it's tv..yes it's fictional..but pretty lame when someone is trying to make a hit out of show on doctors showing tits etc. My opinion is if the show and the writers were that good, and had alot of faith that the show would make it as a medical drama...they wouldn't have to resort to sexuality . Chemistry between docs etc is great in a show..but shouldn't have to lower their standards for ratings.

I completely agree. I cannot take her part in the show seriously. Both my husband and I commented on the inappropriate style of the administrator's clothing the first night we watched the show.

She dresses far too casually for an administrative position almost anywhere, but I believe that this, too, may be an exaggeration to make a point. Nora is insecure and, although an adequate administrator, would benefil (as many people would, professionally and personally) by exhibiting greater professionalism in their outward appearance. In Nora's case, her clothing reflects her inward feelings, garnered in youth, that she was never quite good enough as-is. Many who dress provocatively, or inappropriately for the circumstance, do so as a sort of camoflage technique ... people notice the clothing rather than the person ... or in Nora's case, the person's clothing and ... physical attributes ... rather than the vunerable personality within.

So do you think her inappropriate attire is meant to suggest that she's actually mentally ill or unstable? It's just really distracting that the hospital director has so much cleavage! And all the tacky accessories-- really unprofessional and not like any hospital administrator I've ever seen. And even though I think Annabella Sciorra is usually a great actress, it's difficult to see her this way.

"So do you think her inappropriate attire is meant to suggest that she's actually mentally ill or unstable? "Not at all! As I said, it is an exaggeration, meant to make a point for viewers to catch about her inward personality (the show is excellent about challenging viewers in this way). As to what it indicates, it is simply that she is fully and entirely human. Everyone has quirks, idiocyncrocies, past baggage that is carried forward ... our little neuroses that make us fully-formed human beings (even in the case of "partial personality disorders" *grin*. The name there is a bit of a misnomer). It is a fictional show, and the demonstrating of inward character traits in this way is a common and very effective tool of fiction. It assists readers / viewers to get a quick grasp of a character's inward nature without spending massive amounts of time in childhood / adolescent flashbacks, or multiple crisis leading to deep interpersonal discussions that would compromise the developing character dynamics and most certainly make Nora appear "unstable." 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
