I am also a mental health nurse and I don't see anything wrong with the name of the show... if you actually watched it you would not be offended because you would wish the doctors in your facility would treat the patients like this man does.. i know its fictitious and all but you should watch it then post again and tell me if you are offended..... thanks

I am a 43 year old woman who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic features in 1997. I can see how someone might find the show's title offensive at first......but I am in 100% agreement....you have to see the show and see how the head psychiatrist in the show is so compassionate and empathetic with the patients....thank you both for working in the field...

I guess Americans do not know that the term "mental" is not complimentary. I just saw the show and did not find it offensive, aside from the title. As expected, was not very realistic. As fiction, it was lackluster. doubt i will watch again. thanks for your reply..... Do you find this valuable?

There is nothing to be shame of. Its not like 1920s not tell everyone keep themselves as shameful as punishment.
Today, everything is open and there is alot help out there and people to understand the meaning and be support. I know there s no one s perfect but good to know we are not alone.

You obviously took my post in the wrong way. I didn't intend on making it offensive or shameful in any way and I'm sorry if you felt it was.

I can understand that you find the name of the show offensive. But if it offends you so, why did you call yourself a "mental" health nurse. Why not psychiatric or psych nurse? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yes he's compassionate and that's great, all doctors should be but the show doesn't accurately depict mental health or mental health hospitals or the type of care that patients get in these facilities. I found that episode gives to picture of the standard schizophrenic who experiences positive symptoms, but also fuels the stigma of schizophrenics being violent. Working in inpatient acute psych is a hard job and it's not all about giving hugs and understanding to treat mental illness like for example delusional mania or acute psychosis. An honestly I assume every episode is going to be either someone with depression or someone with schizophrenia though I would like to see an episode on a borderline patient that has poor insight into their illness and addictions issues.

It's not the word by itself it's the meaning of the word in the context in which it is being used. Mental in this sense means "crazy" like "that guy in mental". Just the same way that the word "junkie" is an offensive term to refer to drug addicts by.

I agree, I myself am a borderline patient. I watched the show and enjoyed it although I did go into it knowing it would not depict reality. It would be great if they showed how many people with borderline are often turned away or rejected by health professionals simply because of the stigma attached to it. Not all do but many do. And shed some light on the disorder as well. Either way, I think the show will do well.

The title of Mental made me hesitant to watch the pilot show. I have bipolar disorder, and I am repeatedly aware of the stigma attached to that particular diagnosis. It is for this reason that I do not give any indication of my situation to other individuals whom I do not know well. Its one thing to admit to having experienced depression but any other mental health issure seems to be misunderstood by the general public. After deciding to check out the show, I found that it intriqued me, and I didn't come away with the idea that the name is offensive. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I also have bipolar, as well as my son. I love the show and I think people are ridiculous if they are offended. It's about time they had a show about metal illness. I will continue to watch and enjoy the show. :) Do you find this valuable?

There's nothing offensive about the title...Any title would probably offend you. At least they didn't call it Cuckoo. At the end of the day it's a great show that introduces people to the world of mental illness. Relax...there's no need to be uptight about the title. If there's anything offensive about this show, it that it is shot in another country where it is obvious that there is no ethnic diversity where it is supposedly taking place...Los Angeles. Watch for the lack of diversity when they do scenes outside of the hospital. Do you find this valuable?
